An 800 m2 three story apartment building renovated on a relatively small budget. Each floor of the building is a single three or four bedroom apartment with private elevator landing and private parking tucked beneath the first floor of the sloping site.
Like most Japanese apartment buildings built in the past thirty years this one was designed with intricately compartmentalised rooms connected by hallways — making daily life a ritual of opening and closing doors, and enforcing privacy between activities that no longer matches the expectations of modern life.
Lacking budget to reorganise the planning of the units in large ways we focused on opening the spaces to one another and creating more functional kitchens and baths. The entrance hall on the ground floor and the parking garage were also refinished.
