concept sketch oslo triennale

photos are mostly done for minami azabu house and i will post a few of them in coming days.

in meantime, i found these comments from the judges on the oslo triennale website and thought they were interesting enough to repeat here.  It is very cool that they make the link between Sejima and our project.

from the judges, regarding our proposal called Legitimate Landscape:

This project exemplifies an innovative and sensitive use of the classical tools of architecture – the reading of context, the definition of spaces that participate in this context and thus its reinterpretation.

It shows nicely crafted architectural work, where architecture is a part of a larger system.

The jury can see a parallel in the well-known Tourist Road Project of the Norwegian National Road Authorities, extended into the city fabric by introducing high quality, site-specific installations that respond to the surroundings.

LEGITIMATE LANDSCAPE presents a solution for how to design architecture in the city using a case study from Tokyo. However, applying the same methods to Oslo would require intensive studies and time-consuming preparations. By definition this project cannot be a-contextual, prepared by an architect from the other side of the globe. The proposal could result in very interesting, and potentially very innovative architectural installations, but within the framework of the Oslo Architecture Triennale it seems quite impossible.

The topic of the first Oslo Triennale was the addition of 100 000 new housing units in Oslo. SAANA’S Tokyo based proposal for this challenge was presented through a series of cartographies, collected in five books, depicting that a slight increase in building density in the various Oslo boroughs was a viable solution to the stipulated task. The proposal for this Man Made Reformulate competition introduces knowledge learned from small spaces in Tokyo as a possible next step in this Triennale evolution, stating this as the starting point. “Since we are here anyway, shall we imagine what the city can become?”
